UK Graduate Visa Overview

The Graduate Visa is a post-study work route that allows international students who have successfully completed an eligible UK degree to remain in the UK for up to two years, or up to three years for doctoral graduates, to work or seek employment at any skill level.

Important: While the Graduate Visa does not provide a direct pathway to settlement (Indefinite Leave to Remain), it offers a valuable opportunity to gain UK work experience. Where appropriate, individuals on the Graduate Immigration Route may switch to an immigration route that leads to settlement, such as the Skilled Worker, Global Talent, or Innovator Founder route.

1. Graduate Visa Requirements for International Students

To qualify for a Graduate Visa, applicants must satisfy UK Visas & Immigration that they:

  • Have successfully completed a UK degree or another eligible qualification
  • Studied at a UK Higher Education Provider that holds student sponsor status and maintains a track record of compliance
  • Have held permission as a Student for the relevant qualification and met the minimum study period requirements
  • Are applying from within the UK and hold valid Student leave at the time of application
  • Have not previously been granted permission under the Doctorate Extension Scheme (DES) or the Graduate route
  • Do not fall for refusal under suitability grounds in the Immigration Rules

Note: The precise requirements may vary depending on individual circumstances, and it is advisable to seek expert legal advice to ensure compliance.

2. UK Degree Completion Requirements for a Graduate Visa

To qualify for the Graduate Immigration Route, applicants must have completed a UK degree or another eligible qualification at the required level. Eligible qualifications include:

  • A UK bachelor's degree
  • A UK postgraduate degree, such as a master's or doctorate
  • A professional qualification or diploma requiring study at UK bachelor's degree level or above, in a regulated profession under UK law or a UK public authority

In each case, the qualification must be awarded by a UK Higher Education Provider with a track record of compliance and must be formally conferred prior to the Graduate Visa application.

Additional Eligibility: Applicants may also be eligible if, after completing an eligible qualification during their most recent Student leave, they were sponsored to serve as a Student Union Sabbatical Officer.

3. Study at a Compliant UK Higher Education Provider

To qualify for a Graduate Visa, the qualification must have been obtained from a UK Higher Education Provider that holds a student sponsor licence and is recognised by the Home Office as having a track record of compliance.

Important: Only institutions that meet these criteria are authorised to report successful course completion to UK Visas & Immigration, which is mandatory for the Graduate Immigration Route.

4. Graduate Visa Student Permission Period Requirements

Applicants must have held Student permission for a minimum period and must have completed a substantial portion of their studies physically in the UK.

For courses lasting 12 months or more:

Applicants must have held Student permission for at least 12 months and studied in the UK for that period.

For courses shorter than 12 months:

Applicants must have completed the entire course in the UK on a Student visa.

5. Applying from Within the UK with a Valid Student Visa

The Graduate route is only available to applicants who are physically present in the UK and who hold valid Student leave at the time of application.

Warning: Applications made from outside the UK or after Student leave has expired will be refused, and overstaying may adversely affect the applicant's immigration record.

6. Restrictions on Previous Graduate or Doctorate Scheme Visas

Applicants who have previously been granted leave under the Doctorate Extension Scheme (DES) or the Graduate route are not eligible to apply again. The Graduate Visa is intended as a one-time opportunity for recent graduates to remain in the UK for a limited period.

Important: Applicants must consider alternative immigration options to remain in the UK lawfully if they have previously used these routes.

7. Graduate Visa Suitability Criteria under Immigration Rules

Graduate Visa applications must not fall for refusal under suitability grounds in the Immigration Rules, which include factors such as:

  • Criminality or serious misconduct
  • Breaches of immigration law, including deception or overstaying
  • Non-payment of NHS debt or outstanding Home Office litigation costs

Serious Consequences: A refusal on suitability grounds may carry serious consequences and impact future applications.

8. Is Sponsorship Required for the Graduate Visa?

The Graduate Visa is an unsponsored route. Applicants do not need a job offer or a Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS) to qualify.

9. How to Apply for a UK Graduate Visa

Applicants must submit their Graduate Visa application before their Student leave expires, and only after their education provider has confirmed course completion to the Home Office.

Application Process:

  • Applications are made online from within the UK
  • Require submission of supporting documents, including the CAS reference from the Student visa application
  • Identity verification is typically completed through the UK Immigration: ID Check app or via a biometric appointment at a UKVCAS centre if necessary

Processing Time: The Home Office aims to process Graduate Visa applications within eight weeks of the application date. Applicants are advised to apply early and avoid non-essential travel until a decision is received.

10. Graduate Visa Fees and the Immigration Health Surcharge

Graduate Visa applicants must pay the Home Office application fee and the Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS).

As of July 2025:

  • Application fee: £880
  • Immigration Health Surcharge: £1,035 per year of leave granted

Total Costs:

  • Two-year Graduate Visa: £880 + £2,070 = £2,950
  • Three-year Graduate Visa: £880 + £3,105 = £3,985

Important: Both fees must be paid in full at the time of application, and applicants should verify the current fee levels before applying.

11. Length of Stay under the Graduate Immigration Route

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree graduates: May remain in the UK for two years
  • Doctoral graduates: May remain for three years

12. Can a UK Graduate Visa Be Extended?

Important: It is not possible to extend leave under the Graduate Immigration Route.

13. Switching to a Work Visa After the Graduate Visa Expires

Applicants wishing to remain in the UK after their Graduate Visa expires must switch to another immigration route before their leave ends.

Common options include:

  • Skilled Worker route
  • Global Talent route
  • Innovator Founder route

Planning Required: Each route has specific requirements, including job offers, endorsements, and eligibility criteria. It is advisable to plan early and seek expert legal advice to ensure a smooth transition.

14. Does the Graduate Visa Lead to Settlement in the UK?

The Graduate Visa does not directly lead to settlement (ILR). However, it provides an opportunity to gain work experience, and holders may switch to settlement routes if they meet the requirements.

Additional Benefit: Time spent on the Graduate route may also contribute to the 10-year long residence route for settlement.

15. Graduate Visa Conditions and Work Restrictions

Graduate Visa holders may work in the UK without restriction on the type of employment and are not subject to minimum salary requirements.

Permitted Activities:

  • May be employed, self-employed, or engage in voluntary work
  • Can change jobs without notifying the Home Office
  • May study further, provided the course does not require Student sponsorship

Restrictions:

  • Not permitted to work as professional sportspersons or sports coaches
  • Public funds are not accessible under the Graduate route

16. Impact of the Graduate Visa on Long-Term UK Immigration Plans

  • Settlement under work-based routes: Time spent on the Graduate Visa does not count towards the qualifying period for ILR under work-based routes
  • Switching routes: To qualify for settlement, holders must switch into another route that leads to ILR, and the qualifying period begins from the date leave is granted under the new route
  • 10-year long residence: Time spent on the Graduate route is considered lawful residence and may count towards the 10-year long residence route

17. Can Dependants Join You on a Graduate Visa?

  • Existing dependants: Dependants already in the UK with permission as the main applicant's dependent may extend their stay when the main applicant applies for the Graduate Visa
  • New dependants: New dependants are generally not permitted, except where a dependent child is born in the UK during Student or Graduate leave

18. Graduate Visa Refusals: Common Mistakes to Avoid

Graduate Visa applications can be refused for reasons such as:

  • Applying after Student leave has expired
  • Applying from outside the UK
  • Submitting the application before course completion has been confirmed
  • Failing to complete a qualifying course
  • Suitability issues
  • Providing incomplete documentation

Recommendation: Applicants should ensure they meet all requirements and submit a complete application to avoid refusal.

19. Future Changes to the UK Graduate Immigration Route

The Graduate route was introduced in July 2021 and remains subject to periodic review.

Recent and Potential Changes:

  • Effective from 16 July 2025: Changes to dependent partner eligibility
  • Under Discussion: Possible reduction in Graduate Visa duration (no such change has been implemented as of July 2025)

Stay Informed: Applicants should remain informed of potential policy updates and seek legal advice when planning their immigration pathway.
